DOSBOX is a really great program ...but my current machine will hardly ever
give
useable results with the like of Elder Scrolls Battlespire / Arena
...Stonekeep
..I remember there was another Old-Dos-games helper around a few years ago..
I can't remember its name ...anybody ???
It must no longer be in development / support but I'd like to give it a try.

VDMSound perhaps?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

It's hardware support outside of sound cards is very limited but it has
succeeded in getting some games running on my machine.

Umm ... the VDMSound code was incorporated into DosBox a couple of
years ago.

Trimble, the short answer is no, there is nothing more likely than
DosBox to get old games running on your machine. However, DosBox is a
CPU hog, so if your PC is <2GHz you may well get unplayable slowness
for some games. Arena runs fine on my 2.2GHz Athlon, but I don't have
Battlespire or Stonekeep.

Without using DosBox, all you can do is mess around with XP's
Compatibility Mode settings - this is enough to get some games to run,
and when they do run, they run much faster than in DosBox.

If you run Linux, you can use DosEmu instead of DosBox - it's not quite
as stable, but runs much faster.

The point is that you can use VDMSound and Windows XP's built-in DOS
emulator and play most DOS games at full CPU speed.

I was going through the same issues a while back, and found a pretty
interesting group of forums for getting old games working. You'll find a
few alternatives to DOSBox mentioned, and might even find specific info on
those games you are having trouble with.

Good luck!
