Gothic 2 - how to become a Paladin?

I'm currently playing as a militia officer in Gothic 2. I'm in chapter 2,
and have completed all the militia tasks I've been given. I'd like to
progress on to Paladin, but I'm not sure how - I've asked Lord Hagen, and he
says I need to prove myself, but I can't find any details on how to do that.

Also, are there any English walkthroughs for Gothic 2 online yet? The only
ones I could locate were either German or Russian.

After you do all the Mine Valley quests and return to the "new world",
you will need to clear Bennet of the crime of murdering Lothar. Once
you do that, you will have proved yourself to Hagen.

Ah, quite a way to go then - I was hoping to do it before going to the
mines, so as to improve my weapons and armour. As it is, even individual
Orcs are having no trouble killing me. Well, I guess I'd better just take
another tour or two around the wilderness to try and level-up a few more
times.

The thing about Gothic 2 is... have long legs, learn to run, fast, very
fast.
Its more about stealth and sneaking/avoidance at start.

Just to get into the castle in the vally of mines was a hillarious
experience. You can get a set of heavy milita armor there though. It cost
2500gp.

Yeah and there is a HUGE bug/effect at the bottom of that ramp where you can
just lead all the orcs to the bottom of it and they can't attack you. Then
just pick them off at will. Similar to the water trick for beasts. If you want
to gain some levels quickly this is the best way by far.

You will need to find the Eye of Innos eventually. Have you been asked to go
the the Valley of the Mines yet and find out what happened to the expedition?
