I'm at the point in Chapter 1 where I can choose either the
bowmaker, smith, alchemist or fire mages(if I knew where to get a sheep). What
are some advantages to any of these guilds? How good is the magic system in the
game?I know bows are pretty good. Going toe to toe is tough on the
wallet(healing stuff). I messed up the first thieves guild quest. I thought I
was supposed to deliver to the merchant, but that made it a failed quest. So,no
thieves guild right?Thanks,Dawg

You are confusing guilds and professions and sundry other things. There
are three games here - you can be an apprentice / fire mage, a
mercenary/ dragonhunter or a guardsman / Paladin. Each of those three
plays like a very different game, so play them all. 8>. If you have to
pick one, mage is good fun. You can get a sheep from a shepherd .. there
are several, but only one has a sheep smart enough to follow you back.
(rot13) .. gur furcureq ng gur zrepranel/eroryf snez.

Within each game you can join any of the merchants (bowmaker, alchemist,
smith, etc.). I recommend bowmaker.

You can =also= be a member of the thieves guild. And no, screwing up one
quest doesn't stop you.

You can actually choose any of the craft guilds to join. Those are
separate from the choice you must make between the Paladins, Mercenaries
and Fire Mages. I usually learn wolf skinning from Bospar (sp?) but tell
him I need to investigate the other shops then eventually sign on with the
smith so I can make my own weapons. But you can do all their little "you
must impress us" quests before choosing any of them.

It's the most powerful combat method once you develop your char. However
Paladins get some powerful magic too later in the game.

No, don't worry about that yet. You can still join the TG even if you
piss off whatshisname in the bar. Have you investigated the farm lands
much? There are some brigands in a cave near one farm. Investigate *all*
their items to further your quest to reach the TG.

I wasn't really confused.Just mistaken.Anyway,I found "Betsy".
I also found that note in the bandit's cave up the path behind the
farm.Haven't figure that one out yet.
Basically,I'm going out exploring as far as I can and fighting everything
that's not too tough for my skillsAnd gathering stuff. Some of the
Skeletons,Orcs,wargs are still too tough.

Did you find any "unusual" fish?

Yup.Got the note from the fish, but it didn't really help. Joined the monastery
last night and finished the "duties".I guess now I'll become an apprentice too.

One thing about bows and swords is arrows and bolts run out pretty quick while
a sword lasts forever. I'm tyring to balance bow use with hand weapon use.It
seems the bow works better on critters and hand weapons are better against
humans. Also, managing skill points can be very tricky.

Yeah, but IIRC there's no weight penalty, so just buy every damn arrow
(or bolt) that you come across. Same deal with mana potions (and weeds)
if you play a mage .. I ran out somewhere around Ch3, having fireballed
every living Orc, Shaman, Elite, Wolf, Warg, and earthworm in 'the old
lands' (and, I must admit, quite a few innocent trees).

Learn potions at an advanced level, and use those for Dex/Str/etc
increases, save skill points for important stuff. And don't bother
learning how to remove the left hand minor metatarsal from infected
bloodworms, or whatever .. ain't worth the points it costs.

Very important: bows will kill humans, while melee weapons
knock them out. Knocking them out is far better than killing
most of the time.

I'd also advise doing all of the entrance quests for each of
the three main groups, and only then devote yourself to one.
This gives you extra experience, as well as making a nice save
game spot if you want to replay later as a different profession.
