What are they good for? I have a Hunger trapped in a Grand Soul Gem
and i'd like to cash it in (valued at 50 000) but that doesn't seem
possible. I also have a number of other daedra trapped in soul gems
but i'm confused as to how to effectively use them. I've briefly
discussed the possibilities over with a local Enchanter in Balmora but
i left the conversation feeling discouraged. Any ideas?

the enchanter in balmora will enchant a weapon or item or garment for a
price, to make the enchanted item magical by what ever properties you ask
for, or if you are magically inclined you can attempt it your self. you must
have several stats high enough to attempt it though, if you fail the gem is
cracked and the soul is released. you will need to get another soul gem and
capture a new soul in it. BTW the tougher the beastie and the grander the
gem, the better the magical properties you can enchant with. dagoths and
golden saints in azura stars and grand stars will give you constant effect
items like levitate or heal or damage on hit and so forth, but you will also
have a higher chance of failing to do it your self. better to pay for the
item to be made for you.

Please take my advice, I don't use it anyway ...

To use a soul gem you click on it and drop it on your equipment body (as if
you were equipping an item)

You use soul gems to:
- Enchant items: Depends on your Intelligence (oddly doesn't depend much on
your enchanting skill). You can create magic items/weapons/armour/etc. You
need a "full" soul gem and must have learned a version of the spell
beforehand (ie: if you want a sword that does 1-30 fire damage when it hits,
you need a soul gem, a weapon and must know any fire damage spell).

- Recharge magic items: To recharge an item drop the full soul gem on your
inventory and when the box comes up pick 'recharge magic item'. How many
charges are restored depends on either Intelligence or Enchant Skill... most
likely Intelligence

- Have somebody build a magic item for you: Depends on how much gold you
have. You can visit any of the enchanters in the world (there are a few of
them around, should be atleast 1 in each town or fort) and they will build
magic items for you, but you have to supply the item and the full soul gem

Using soul gems for recharging or creating items can increase your Enchant
skill, which is good for determining how many charges get used up when you
use an item

You can...

1) Sell them. Actually you trade them for high value stuff just like
any other expensive thing.
2) Use them to make your own enchanted items.
3) Use them with an enchanter to make enchanted items.
4) use them to recharge existing enchanted items.

I found the diminutive size made for excellent kindling this past
weekend while out camping in northern Washington.

None of the standard NPCs has 50000 gold to buy it with.
You can either:
A) add an NPC or set of npcs with lots of cash or
B) go to the Caldera mages guild and sell it to the Dark Elf guy for a
little cash and a lot of scrolls that you can then sell to other
vendors.
