Discussion:
Oblivion: How to Disable Compass/Markers?

Personally, I believe the compass markers are one of the worst design
decisions Bethesda made in Oblivion. The sense of exploration, wonder,
and suspense are gone. Each mission boils down to getting to the
red/green marker that's so conveniently marked for you with 100%
accuracy. I kinda miss delving into a dungeon not knowing where my
objective was, and how far.

Anyway...

Is there any way to disable those red/green waypoint markers in the
game? Or at the very least, disable the on-screen compass that
displays those markers?

All I found so far was a console command to toggle off all the
on-screen display in the game. But I need to see my hit points and
active spells while playing, so that's not an option for me.

Apologies if this is a dumb suggestion, but can't you just switch to a
different active quest? That way you'll still have the markers but
they'll give nothing away about the quest you're doing.

As soon as I posted this I remembered a mod I downloaded that allowed
you to hide compass quest and dungeon markers. I no longer have it, but
I remember it was called "compass-disable".

The Shadowbanish Wine quest you get from the Inn west of the Imperial
City has no markers, if memory serves me right. Having that as an
active quest would clear your compass.

That method would be terribly inconvenient. There are many, many
active quests in Oblivion. Often, it's hard to remember the details of
each quest, *especially* if you play without the compass waypoints. I
often refer to the "active quest" section of my journal to help me.
Otherwise, it'd be downright annoying to wade through the dozens of
dozens of entries in the journal. It'd be equally annoying to try keep
switching the active quest toggle on and off all the time.

The BTMod does disable the waypoint markers on the main game screen.
However, it doesn't remove them from the dungeon maps. Since I often
refer to the automap to get my bearings, I keep unintentionally seeing
the exact location of my objective.

What I would like is for a mod that'll remove the waypoint markers from
both the game screen and the map screen.

BTmod comes with compass-disable features, and BTmod is *the* must-have mod
anyway.

It just occurred to me, do npc's actually speak directions as well? I mean,
its a little pointless having some npc give you a quest when you have
absolutely no idea which direction to go, north/south/east/west. I cant
remember if they do... i relied on the quest map markers to complete the
quests actually. Though now i really want to replay the game without the
compas... i remember how much fun it was searching for Punabi in one of the
mage guild quests in Morrowind.

Sometimes they will give some directions but mostly they just say "here
let me mark it on your map".

They generally give approximate directions (i.e. "east of here", or
"northwest of Bruma"), but some of them will simply name a location,
assuming that you'll follow the directions on your map.

The NPCs giving you quests will still reveal the exact location of the
relevant dungeon/town/shrine on your map.
