Why won't the rat eat me poisoned cheese?

Mantouk won't eat the cheese. If I kill him and all the other rats, will I
find the stuff that Morte had on him when he was kidnapped? I need the box
that I was supposed to deliver. I'm guessing Morte had it on him.

If that's the case, I'll have to go back a long way.

There is a chance that I left the box in a barrel somewhere, but I didn't
leave a note. sigh...

When Morte was abducted, he should have left all his stuff on the ground
(that's my memory of it, anyway). You could go back and see if it's still
there, otherwise you might want to try going back to a saved game just
before it, and check then.

Don't quote me on this, but...

There's a Pawn Shop in the market district, run by an eccentric but
entertaining married couple. I think that all unique items in the game
that are dropped on the ground eventually end up at the shop. That
would include all quest items, of course. You'll have to buy the item
back.

That sounds like it's worth checking out. It would be great news if true.

Just something interesting I found today. Today is the anniversary of the
Pied Piper leading the rats out of Hameline, Germany where rat tails were
once a sort of currency in the same way they are currency in Planescape
Torment.

The full story is here.
http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mpiedpiper.html

It includes this interesting passage about the Pied Piper
" There are many other references to the story in Hamelin itself, including
a street named "Bungelosen Strasse," literally "the street without the sound
of drums," allegedly so named because dancing was forbidden in that street
in memory of what had happened to the children.
Taken at face value, the inscription suggests that Manchester was right--130
kids came to a bad end at the hands of a deviant. But there is no
corroborating record of any mass execution of children in the vicinity of
Hamelin, which would seem to be an important event if it really happened."

Is it the married couple that fights a lot?
I think it's in what's called the lower ward.

Morte was kidnapped by the entrance to the lower ward (the one with
the Foundry), close to the guy who sells training. Aren't you now in
the cellar of the Bones of the Night, the guy who's holding Morte for
ransom? If so, you're just a short jog from the pile of stuff which
Morte dropped (and also just a short jog from the pawn shop some of
the other posts talk about, but Mortes stuff wont be there).

Quest items remain forever i think, but most other nice stuff like a
good weapon morte might have got from a quest disappears after a few
days.

I'm a short jog from the stuff? I didn't see it. I talked to all the skulls.
Which floor are you talking about? Are you talking about the floor with the
rat, the floor with Lothar or the floor in the middle?
No,no... Morte was kidnapped at the entrance to the whole lower ward,
the map section in which the Bones of the Night are. Go up from the
cellar, past the shelves of skulls, out on the street again, jog to
the left along the street, and look for a pile of stuff on the floor.
It'll be close to the guy selling training just by the left
entrance/exit to the lower ward.
