These are probably old news but I just stumbled on them:

http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~alandale/dmjava/ is a remake of Dungeon Master with
different maps, story, etc. Very well done but there is apparently no
walkthrough although there is a somewhat informative message board.

http://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23267&highlight=eob are
remakes of Eye of the Beholder I and II with apparently the same maps, etc.

Both are free downloads and run in Java (see the first link for how to run
these, you may need to download something else).

Wow, that's really cool. I'm checking it out now.

Looks good, thanks. I played DM Java for awhile but once
I had too much trouble without a walkthrough and found by
reading the forum that I had missed too much stuff.
I'm playing EOB Java and when I get stuck I have a walkthrough
for that. It's strange but a lot of fun to play EOB with DM rules
of the game (stats, spells, etc. are the same as for DM but
the game is otherwise EOB), kind of a different twist. It
definitely makes that infamous spider level infinitely more
do-able.

As noted by a lot of other people on that message board, couldn't get it to run.
Followed the directions but get a message "Couldn't run Virtual Java Machine".
I have the latest Sun Java running on XP Pro.
Sounds like this is for old DOS machines, particularly when they start telling
you to edit your autoexec.bat and changing environment variables.
I haven't needed to do that since Win95.

Hmm, works fine on my machine. Same specs. No autoexec.bat. Are you sure
that you have the right java environment variables set?

And on a related thread note, go to http://www.grimoiresystems.com/ for a
look at Grimoire, probably the closest thing we'll ever get to in a new
DM dungeon crawl in this 3-d ultra-realism crazed gaming industry.

That was my point. You are supposed to set the environment variable in autoexec.bat.
Anyway it's academic now, I've deleted it. I haven't got a great deal of time to play
games and absolutely none to start fiddling to get one to run.

Same here, but I have no problem.
I downloaded the self-installing file; it asks you to install the Java
Machine if you haven't it, but apart from that it's very easy.
It created an icon, and the game starts and works fine.

EXCEPT: if you get to the pit with "this is my prisoner" a place which old
hands at DM will immediately recognise, the door next to it wouldn't open
for the life of me so after a few weeks iI (unfortunately) deleted the whole
lot. gr. W.Denie

? What level is that?
Anyway, I find the game both fun and frustrating. As was the good old
eye of the beholder (never played the original Dungeon Master) anyway.
